Forget the old stereotypes about short-term jobs! Temporary work can actually be the key to a more stable and flexible career. In this blog, our HR consultant shares what temporary work truly has to offer.
For many, temporary work is still associated with short-term contracts—but in reality, it offers flexibility and long-term continuity. Amid the uncertainties of working life, Barona provides valuable stability and job continuity to over 30,000 employees each year.
“Although temporary contracts are, by definition, fixed-term, for many people they actually represent a promise of something much more lasting,” reflects Topi Peltoluhta, HR Consultant at Barona. He handles industrial sector recruitment and ensures that when one assignment ends, a smooth transition to a new opportunity begins.
When One Job Ends, Another Begins—Smoothly
When a temporary role at a client company is nearing its end, the employee gets a call from Barona well in advance. A contact person checks in to discuss the employee’s current situation, preferences for the next role, and how the past assignment met expectations.
“We proactively monitor each situation and aim to find a suitable new role for top performers as quickly as possible,” Peltoluhta summarizes.
Employees are offered current open positions, but Barona’s recruitment team also actively searches for additional opportunities.
“We call client companies directly to ask whether there’s a need for skilled employees. We also collaborate across teams and sectors. For example, someone working in production might be a great fit for a logistics role,” Peltoluhta explains.
“Often, we already know our employees and can confidently recommend them based on their previous performance and commitment. That can open doors to new roles,” says Peltoluhta, who engages in daily discussions with both workers and employers.
From Summer Jobs or Temp Work to Permanent Roles
What’s especially rewarding, Peltoluhta says, is when an employee transitions from Barona to a permanent position at a client company.
“We have many people who started with Barona in temporary roles and were later hired permanently by the client. That shows we’ve found the right person for the job—and that the employee has enjoyed working there enough to stay on.”
Summer jobs also serve as a springboard for long-term careers. Entry-level roles can grow into positions of greater responsibility and, after graduation, lead to permanent employment.
Sometimes the path leads straight to a career at Barona itself—as was the case for Peltoluhta. He started in a warehouse role while still studying, and after graduating, was offered a position at Barona’s office based on a client recommendation. Soon, he’ll be celebrating four years as an HR Consultant.
Great People Are Always in Demand
No matter how well someone performs, employment can sometimes end unexpectedly. At Barona, the goal is always to help top talent take the next step.
“If a contract ends due to organizational changes, our employees benefit from our extensive network. We’ll support them in finding new work,” says Peltoluhta.
“We don’t leave anyone behind.”
Assembly worker Anastasia Nikiforova is thankful for the fast support she’s received from Barona—not once, but twice.
“When my fixed-term contract ended, I was quickly offered a new job. The same happened again after company restructuring. I always get help from my Barona contact if anything is unclear,” Nikiforova says gratefully.
“Anastasia really proved herself on the job. Our client gave excellent feedback, so we were more than happy to find her a new role quickly,” Peltoluhta adds.
